As inquietações próprias de quem está sujeito ao tempo levam a humanidade a angustiar-se diante da sua condição de ser-lançado-ao-mundo, pois, não conseguindo realizar-se no presente, tem o porvir como única esperança. Assim, essa inexorável caminhada em direção ao futuro, que jamais se consolida como presente, é o pano de fundo da formatação moral do homem na filosofia de Santo Agostinho. O ser, oter, o medo e a morte levam o homem, destituído de qualquer autonomia, a buscar a felicidade que é, também, finalidade, apenas na noção de eternidade. Então, a vida feliz realiza-se tão somente na participação com a Trindade no pleno exercício da verdadeira liberdade, a de ver-se longe do mal.
