Las investigaciones de Newman sobre el arrianismo del siglo IV fundamentaron su posterior desarrollo espiritual y teológico. El clérigo anglicano entendió que esta corriente era motivada por el racionalismo, unido a la política eclesial del momento. Para él resultaban necesarias para entender la persona de Jesucristo la contemplación y la verdadera fe que nacen de la Escritura, la oración personal y la celebración litúrgica. La recepción en los siglos XIX y XX de esta obra con una complicada historia redaccional denota que es no solo histórica sino también expresión de su propio itinerario personal y eclesial. Los arrianos del siglo IV (1832-1871) sería un detenido análisis del arrianismo, que nos permite conocer mejor el concilio de Nicea. El autor inglés destaca también el papel de los laicos en la recepción de la verdadera fe cristológica.
