Abstract

Newman's study of fourth-century Arianism informed his later spiritual and theological development. The Anglican clergyman understood that this current was motivated by rationalism coupled with the ecclesiastical politics of the day. For him, contemplation and true faith born of Scripture, personal prayer and liturgical celebration were necessary to understand the person of Jesus Christ. The reception of this work in the 19th and 20th centuries, with its complicated redactional history, shows that it is not only historical but also an expression of his own personal and ecclesial journey. The Arians of the Fourth Century (1832-1871) is a detailed analysis of Arianism that gives us a better understanding of the Council of Nicaea. The English author also stresses the role of the laity in the reception of the true Christological faith.
