SYNODALITY AS THE PATH TO DIALOGUE AMONGST CHRISTIAN CHURCHES

Pope Francis has reintroduced synodality as the Church's way of being, characterised by listening and dialogue in the pursuit of deepening communion. At the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325), the Nicene Creed was drafted in the presence of the Christian Churches, within a context of communion (koinonia). Together, they discussed theological and ecclesiastical themes, wherein the affirmation "we believe" expressed unity arising from the diversity of the Churches. This article seeks to reflect upon synodality as the theological locus of dialogue amongst Christian Churches, in resonance with the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325). The methodology employed is bibliographical. The approach adopted invites the reader to revisit the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea whilst problematising its pertinence for contemporary ecumenical dialogue. Finally, the necessity for the maturation of synodality as a structuring principle for the Churches is observed, in the construction of a unity that emerges from the diversity of the Christian Churches.
