Saint Augustine and Kant: a meeting of thoughts in the category of autonomy

Saint Augustine, as well as Imanuel Kant, gives special attention toautonomy, though they do it in different perspectives. The aim of this paper is toestablish a relation between the concepts of the two thinkers, who lived at atwelfth century’s distance. The search of this aim will be realized from threeprincipal topics: the category of autonomy, in relation with the “liberum arbitrium”of man e his capacity of choice; the elaboration of the category of the will byKant; and the special character of Augustine’s thinking as expressed in theaxiom ”Understand to Believe”. The sources of the paper: Augustine’s worksDe Libero Arbitrio” and Confessiones; Kant’s theory will be reported from hiswork Foundations of the Metaphysics of Moral.
