This article investigates the understanding of images and their role in religious books with emblems. To this end, it focuses its analysis on the titles; first, on conceptions of the image (eikon, imago, pictura), then on panoramic views (hieroglyphica, symbola, and emblema [Sinnbilder / sinnen-bilder / Merkbeelden]), and finally on interpretations of textual or visual languages (devotio, contemplatio, meditatio [Andacht], oratio). The study is based on the emblem book database of the University of Illinois, which includes 1,407 specimens, and it aims to first describe the languages used, whether peripheral or dominant. Looking at these languages, it seeks to clarify to what extent they document a Renaissance anthropological turn even in the religious field, or if something third and distinct was created—different from both "pure" and anthropocentric humanist positions and "pure" and theocentric religious positions. In general terms, the study uses theoretical references that clarify etymological, cultural, historical, and theological aspects of books with emblems; specifically, it consults works about conceptions and functions of emblems, religious emblems, and the history of art. Overall, the study aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of images in religious books with emblems and their use in pious practices.
