Abstract

The relationship between primacy and synodality is the main issue today in Orthodox-Catholic dialogue. Pope Francis himself affirmed that Catholics have much to learn from the synodal tradition of the Orthodox Church. The issue was studied in Chieti, Italy, in 2016, by the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic and the Orthodox Church. The document that was issued recognized that primacy and synodality are two essential and interrelated expressions of Church’s unity and government at the local, regional and universal level. Having in mind that the understanding of the prerogatives of the Bishop of Rome has been historically a problem in the relations between the East and the West, this article seeks to consider whether in the universal Church there is a need for a primacy and how this should be exercised.
