O culto a Jesus Cristo nem sempre ocorreu de modo direto. No início era apenas Deus Pai quem recebia adoração, embora por meio de Jesus Cristo. Compreendendo o contexto político e social do período helenístico, o qual deu causa ao surgimento do culto aos reis gregos, é possível vislumbrar uma correlação entre esse culto ao rei o culto a Jesus Cristo. Uma análise de textos gregos do período helenístico, remanescentes na epigrafia, nos papiros e moedas, revela a similitude entre os títulos e termos relacionados ao rei grego e os títulos e termos vinculados a Jesus Cristo. Essa similitude de títulos e termos permite pensar que o objetivo alcançado pelos reis gregos quando autorizaram e promoveram seu próprio culto, pode ter sido o mesmo objetivo almejado pela liderança cristã: assegurar a lealdade e a obediência do povo cristão.
