“Thou shalt not kill!”
the trace of God in the ethical event of the face in Emmanuel Lévinas

This article investigates access to God and its meaning based on the thinking of Emmanuel Lévinas, even though Friedrich Nietzsche announced the “death of God” in the last century and Michel Foucault diagnosed the “death of man” in Nietzsche's writings. The reflection focuses on the Levinasian concept of the face of the other as the original source of ethical meaning and the first expression of transcendence. In the nakedness of this face, the Infinite manifests itself in the finite, revealing itself through the ethical appeal expressed in the commandment: “Thou shalt not kill!” From this perspective, the face of the other constitutes the primordial place of the relationship with God, who reveals himself not as an objective presence, but as a withdrawal, whose passage is inscribed as a trace. Therefore, the hypothesis that the meaning of the word “God” can be reconstituted as l'échafaudage from the ethical event of the face is sustained.
