Conexões não-causais

"Se o fósforo não tivesse sido riscado, ele não teria acendido". Este contrafactual expressa uma relação de dependência entre dois eventos: a ignição do fósforo dependia do fósforo ser riscado. Aqui, a dependência é causal: riscar o fósforo fê-lo acender. Dizemos também: a ignição foi causalmente determinada pelo friccionar. A relação causal é um caso paradigmático do que chamarei de relações de "dependência" ou "determinação" entre eventos e estados; de fato, é a única relação desse tipo que tem sido explicitamente reconhecida e amplamente falada. Essas relações de dependência não-causais são pervasivamente presentes na rede de eventos, e é importante entender sua natureza, suas inter-relações e sua relação com a relação causal se quisermos ter uma visão clara e completa das maneiras pelas quais os eventos andam juntos neste mundo.
