At the beginning of the Science of Logic, Hegel outlines that Science must begin with what is most indeterminate – Being. This Being is lacking in determination, therefore, it is pure being, nothing. From the relationship between being and nothing, its first determination would emerge, the result of the being's internal negativity; now, being would not be simply pure being, but being there (Dasein). However, in being there is not yet found a unity between being and its negation, this unity will only occur in being for itself, through the category of infinity. Hegel, when trying to find a correlate for this dynamic in the objective world, resorts to the process of constitution of self-conscience, because in it resides the unity between his being and his other. Axel Honneth, philosopher belonging to Critical Theory, presents a theory of recognition inspired by the writings of Hegel's youth that offers an explanation about the constitution of personal identity based on an intersubjective process and on the social dynamics. However, Honneth is categorical in stating that his enterprise is built against the Hegelian logic, to safeguard the post-metaphysical standards of contemporary philosophy. Thus, the objective of this work will be to offer an attempt at a logical reading of the theory of recognition from Hegel's logic of being for itself, in an effort to bring out a possible internal logic, by demonstrating that Hegelian logic is not entirely absent in recognition as presented by Honneth; as well as, exposing the debate around this issue with its possible imperfections.
