This article aims to explore the concept of Education presented by Émile Durkheim and Antonio Gramsci, considering the historical contexts of each author. The analysis is based on a bibliographical review of the works “Education and Sociology” (1892) and “Prison Notebook”, writings from Notebook 12 published in 1948 and 1951. The results show that, for Durkheim, education plays a fundamental role in the transmission and internalization of social morals, adapting individuals to integrate into society. For Gramsci, on the other hand, education, through pedagogy, is shown to be a mediating and fundamental instrument in the process of understanding society and can develop an awareness of social position, contributing to the transformation of society, as it challenges power structures and promotes the emancipation of the subaltern classes.
