Abstract

he present research report presents some considerations about a doctoral research which is being developed in the Gradua-te Program in Information Science of the Federal University of Paraíba. The problematic is centered in the question of ac-ceptance and utilization of scientific illustrations as a document for communication and construction of scientific knowledge in Information Science. The main objective of the mentioned investigation is to analyze the system of visual scientific commu-nication elaborated by César Pinto, from the album named Schistosomiasis mansoni, in order to comprehend the information practices elaborated in the 1940s, on the assumption that visual scientific communication enables the comprehension of a set of information elaborated from many visual codes that represent the perception and the logic of the structuring of a scientific field, constituting, thus, the habitus. This way, the approach is based on the Structural Constructivism as its theoretical and methodological foundation, which is guided by the concepts of habitus and field (BOURDIEU, 2014). These concepts show how the individuals interiorize and exteriorize the social practices that define them. The research is justified by the incipien-cy, in the area of Information Science, of works that contemplate the scientific communication from the imagery records. Therefore, it is expected that the considerations presented in this work enable and intensify the discussion about photograph-ic documents, comprehended as a channel for the visual scientific communication, beyond the contribution for the preserva-tion of the Brazilian scientific memory, as well as for the elaboration of future studies that contemplate this discussion.
