Abstract

Drawing on the insights of Karl Rahner, this article underscores the centrality of hope in understanding the salvific content of religious messages and the nature of religion itself. It begins by highlighting religion's message as one of salvation for humanity. Accepted in faith, the announcement of religion takes on the language of promise and finds in hope its effective reception. It is then insisted upon the current necessity of considering salvation particularly as an object of hope, and, with Rahner, the issue of death is discussed regarding the possibility (or not) of the full realization of hope. Finally, the problem that arises with hope is mentioned insofar as it directs our representation of satisfaction into the future, keeping us dissatisfied in the only time in which we truly live: the present.
