CONTEMPORARY JUDAISM AND THE TRAUMA OF THE SHOAH (HOLOCAUST)

This article evaluates the consequences of the Shoah (Holocaust) in the constitution of contemporary Jewish identity and thought. First, from a historiographical approach, it seeks to understand the theoretical foundations of the Nazi extermination project, emphasizing how the ancient medieval anti-Judaism transmuted into a racist and pseudoscientific antisemitism. After, it also analyzes the process of the industrialization of death, represented by Auschwitz, and the participation or connivance of part of the European populations in the face of the Jewish genocide. In the philosophical and theological scope, a theoretical approach is made regarding the "silence of God" in the face of the Shoah, with emphasis on the varied responses developed by Jewish thinkers regarding the catastrophe. Finally, it evaluates how the trauma of the Shoah was a determining factor for the expansion of the influence of political Zionism and the legitimacy of the creation of the State of Israel. Therefore, the events analyzed here are understood as unavoidable foundations for the shaping of contemporary Jewishness and Judaism.
