The Social Magisterium of Pope Francis
the emergence of a new paradigm in the Social Doctrine of the Church

Pope Leo XIII, with the promulgation of the Encyclical Rerum Novarum in 1891, inaugurated a new era in the Social Magisterium of the Church. His successors, until today, continued this Magisterium, on the one hand maintaining continuity around fundamental values, and on the other hand developing new perspectives, in such a way that we can identify in the trajectory of the Social Doctrine of the Church from Leo XIII to the days today at least three great paradigms. The first so-called Leonian paradigm was in force until the Pontificate of John XXIII and the second between the Pontificates of John XXIII and Benedict VI. The third of these paradigms is inaugurated by the Social Magisterium of Pope Francis. In this article we will study the central characteristics of Pope Francis' new paradigm in the field of the Social Magisterium, as it has been developed in these ten years of his Pontificate.
