The gift of Fire that warms and frees
Theology and symbolic language in a hymn by Ephrem the Syrian

The article presents a translation and commentary on hymn 74 of the ephremean collection known as Hymns on Faith. Starting from the image of heat applied to the Holy Spirit, which Ephrem employs in this hymn, compared with a parallel image presented in a homily of Pseudo Macarius, it is proposed to read the image in question as belonging to the category of fire (in the sense of G. Durand) and it is suggested that the hymn of Ephrem is a splendid example of symbolic theology, which Western theology increasingly shows to be in need.
