Abstract

The intention of this text is to address the issue of women in the context of family and society. The plural women here is necessary, because the culture wants to simplify what is multiple, trying to establish universal definitions, often unilateral and reductionist, and thus normalize what is not acceptable. To talk about women in the context of the family, one cannot avoid touching on the issue of gender, a word used for a long time by common sense to define male and female. Now, its use as a hermeneutic tool to interpret the diverse and reduce inequality and prejudices, ended up being demonized by some people and groups due to useless polarizations that generated ideologies that do not sustain themselves and that show no more admissible ignorance. The reflection also intends to bring to memory a little of the history of the women and men who preceded us, with what is positive about it, but above all with the difficulties that are pointed out as challenges. Then, the proposal is to verify the concrete experience of women and men today, so that the understanding of who we are together can be manifested. Next, a new Christian hermeneutics necessary for a renewed and healthier experience of family and social relationships will be discussed, in the perspective that a new world is possible.
