A hermenêutica é um dos movimentos filosóficos mais importantes, mais fecundos e mais criativos do século XX e Paul Ricoeur é um dos nomes mais representativos desse movimento. Ele estabelece um diálogo crítico-criativo com a história da hermenêutica, enfrentando suas aporias e alargando seus horizontes e, assim, oferece um acesso histórico-sistemático privilegiado ao movimento hermenêutico. Esse estudo está centrado em sua retomada histórica da hermenêutica. Começa justificando a opção de abordagem histórica da hermenêutica a partir de Ricoeur para, em seguida, apresentar sua “descrição” ou seu “balanço” da “história recente da hermenêutica”.
