Abstract

Três séculos após Zenão (fundador da Stoa), o estoicismo se encontrava em meio a uma sociedade onde a decadência moral e a administrativa reinavam juntas. A fé religiosa dividia-se em vários cultos e deuses; a corrupção imperial
e a descrença total dos povos em seus destinos são marcas desse tempo. É precisamente nesse contexto que surge Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Córdova, 4 a.C. – Roma, 65 d.C.). Frente a esse cenário, a filosofia, com Sêneca, assume um
aspecto próprio e adquire o sentido de medicina, de remédio (medicamentum) e guia para o aprimoramento do caráter humano. Este artigo tem como finalidade, portanto, compreender em que medida a compreensão da natureza conduz à superação do temor e fundamenta uma compreensão do homem e do divino marcada pela sabedoria e amizade.
