O tempo qualitativo em Santo Agostinho e o tempo quantitativo em Tomás de Aquino [“Qualitative” time by St. Augustine and Quantitative time by Thomas of Aquinas]

Abstract

O Artigo em questão apresenta dois expoentes máximos da Idade Média que se
esforçaram por responder: “o que é o tempo”? Agostinho de Hipona, na Patrística,
propõe-se demonstrar o tempo (nunc transiens), numa perspectiva psicológica,
como intuição do movimento ou do devir, ao identificá-lo com a própria vida da
alma, que se estende a partir do presente para o passado ou para o futuro
(extensio ou distensio). Tomás de Aquino, na Escolástica, assimila quase integralmente
a teoria do tempo aristotélica, alicerçado nas ciências naturais e entendido
como o número ou medida do movimento segundo “antes” e “depois”,
mas introduz também um implemento original em que aborda a existência de algo
intermediário entre a eternidade e o tempo: “aevum”, referente às substâncias
criadas. Resumindo, Agostinho intui o movimento e focaliza nele o aspecto
qualitativo; ao contrário, Tomás de Aquino mede o movimento e frisa nele o
aspecto quantitativo.
