The purpose of this article is to use the notion of barbarism, found in Michel Henry, applying it to psychiatry, more specifically to the effects of psychiatric diagnoses on categorized individuals. It also seeks to discuss the essentialist and pragmatic functions of diagnosis in psychiatry and its relationship with the phenomena of life and subjectivity. A non-systematic literature review is used as a methodology, through which Henry's phenomenology of life texts, with emphasis on the book A barbarie, and texts aimed at a critical analysis of psychiatric diagnoses and their effects in subjectivation processes were selected. The results showed that the psychiatric diagnosis, by emphasizing the objective aspects of mental disorders - which would refer to alleged brain dysfunctions that, in an essentialist view, would correspond to the very essence of the categorized individual - and neglecting/appeasing the dimension of affectivity/subjectivity, just like modern science, annihilates life itself, in what could be called psychiatric barbarism. On the other hand, when it is taken only in its pragmatic function, as a political device and having pathos as the legitimate subject of the psychiatric field, it is in favor of life, of the subject in his/her uniqueness, of the human.
