Paul Tillich and Religions
Challenges for a Transreligious Encounter

How can Paul Tillich’s thought contribute to the development of a Christian theology of inter-religious dialogue in contemporary times? From this central inquiry, this study aims to demonstrate that Tillich’s boundary theology holds potential to underpin transreligious encounters within the context of multireferential societies. The research is situated within the methodological framework of correlation, coupled with openness to religions, with the purpose of proposing pathways for a Christian theology that engages critically with other faith traditions. The theoretical-conceptual framework is transdisciplinary, grounded in an analysis of Tillich’s work in dialogue with contemporary authors such as Moltmann, Panikkar, Morin, Nicolescu, among others. Complex and transdisciplinary thinking is employed as the epistemological reference. The article is structured in three sections: first, it discusses the notion of “boundary” and the method of correlation as theological and hermeneutical time. Subsequently, it examines the influence of Tillich’s encounter with the East, as evidenced by his trip to Japan and the impact of Buddhist traditions on his reflection. Finally, practical implications for Christian theology of inter-religious dialogue are indicated, emphasizing encounter, preservation of religious identity, and openness to the transreligious. It is concluded that Tillich’s theology, through its critical and welcoming stance, offers a promising path for inter-religious dialogue rooted in Christian faith yet open to the Mystery of the Sacred in other traditions. Correlation and boundary emerge as fruitful categories for the development of an inclusive, contextual, and dialogical theology.
