Abstract

O artigo examina a perspectiva do utilitarismo contemporâneo a respeito de uma série de questões que estão no centro da agenda de sociedades democráticas: desigualdades sociais, preferências individuais/autonomia, direitos e garantias e, finalmente, estabilidade institucional. Apontam-se insuficiências e incongruências da reflexão normativa utilitarista à luz de exigências igualitárias inscritas na cultura política moderna. Essa constatação conduz o trabalho a explorar as raízes dessas dissonâncias, o que se faz através de uma discussão sobre a natureza e a adequação da interpretação utilitarista às ideias de bem-estar e de consequencialismo moral, centrais à abordagem filosófica em questão.
