Abstrações e individuações [Abstractions and individuations]

É por demais conhecida a posição hobbesiana sobre aquilo que – em seu tempo – denominava metafísica de Aristóteles. No Capitulo XLVI do Leviatã, sugestivamente intitulado Das trevas resultantes da vã filosofia e das tradições fabulosas, há uma caracterização desta como absurda e contrária à razão natural. Irônico, já na redação do oitavo capítulo da mesma obra, troçava do sistematizador de Tomás de Aquino que mais havia influenciado sua geração: Francisco Suárez. Chamado por Thomas Hobbes de louco ou pretendente a enlouquecer os demais, Suarez é incluído entre os escolásticos que insistem em discutir questões incompreensíveis. Entretanto, no De corpore, Hobbes argumenta pela necessidade de um conjunto de operações mentais (operations of the mind) para denotar a abstração como a causa do nome de qualquer coisa que se suponha ter existência, ou seja, se detém no tema dos universais, tomista por excelência. Este trabalho integra uma pesquisa de doutoramento e, dentro dos limites estabelecidos, concentrará suas atenções na seguinte indagação: de que modo os elementos da individuação dos corpos presumivelmente concretos são expurgados na denotação das abstrações?
